How to Get Referrals For Tech Jobs - Ultimate Guide With Templates

Hi folks,

What if I told you I landed my first full-time job without even submitting a resume?

It was at MyGlamm. A friend referred me. I had a couple of live projects to show. I got the interview the very next day and started working the following week.

That one referral saved me hours of cold applying. It skipped the line. It got me in front of the right people without needing a perfect resume or cover letter.

That’s the power of referrals.

And yet, most people don’t know how to ask for them. Either they feel awkward reaching out, or they simply don’t know where to start.

That’s why I thought I’d write this newsletter to break it down in the simplest way possible. What referrals are, why they work, and exactly how you can ask for one without making it weird.

Let’s get started.

What’s a Referral?

A referral is when someone inside a company recommends you for a role. It could be as simple as them submitting your resume or passing your name to a hiring manager.

Why this matters:

Your profile jumps the queue
It comes with built-in trust
Your chances of landing an interview go way up

It works for companies too:

Referred candidates are faster to hire and more likely to stay
It saves money on hiring costs
It builds trust within the team

Sometimes, referrals come with bonuses. I once got ₹13,000 at InVideo for referring a friend. At ClanX, we offered ₹1,00,000 for a successful CTO referral. Clearly, referrals aren’t just nice to have, they’re valuable.

Why Do People Refer Others?

Most people assume you have to be best friends with someone to get referred.
That’s not true.

Here’s why people refer others, even if they barely know them:

Companies offer great referral bonuses
It feels good to help someone land a great opportunity
It builds social capital inside the company
If your background is solid, you’re making them look good too

So if your profile aligns with the job, and your message is thoughtful, most folks are happy to help.

How to Ask for a Referral

You don’t need a huge network. You just need to ask the right way.
Here are short, practical templates you can adapt for any channel with a real job link, clear reasons you’re a fit, and a live resume or portfolio link.

1. Cold Email

Hi [Name],
Hope all’s well. I came across this opening at [Company] and thought I’d reach out to check if you’d be open to referring me.

Job Link: [Paste job link here]
Here’s why I think I’m a strong fit:

[Relevant experience or skill]
[Project, metric, or achievement]
[Tech stack or domain expertise]

Resume: [Live resume or portfolio link]

Let me know if this looks good and you’d be open to referring.
Thanks for considering.

2. Cold DM (LinkedIn, Twitter)

Hi [Name],
I’m currently exploring roles and found this opening at [Company] that really fits my profile.

Also, Personalisation Matters Before You Copy-Paste

It’s tempting to just grab a message template and fire it off to 20 people.

But here’s the thing. People can tell when your message is generic. And if it feels like you didn’t put in the effort, they probably won’t either.

Taking a minute to personalise your message makes a huge difference. It shows that you’re thoughtful, serious, and genuinely interested.

You don’t need to write a long note. Even a small touch goes a long way:

Mention a shared college, company, or mutual
Reference something they’ve built, written, or shared
Acknowledge any common ground, even a comment thread or group you’re both part of

This shows you’re not just asking for a favor. You’ve done your homework and actually care.

A Note on Reaching Out to Recruiters

You might be wondering, can I ask recruiters for referrals too?

I usually don’t recommend it. Recruiters are already handling dozens of roles and hundreds of applications. They’re not typically the ones who give referrals, and their inboxes are often flooded.

But if they’re actively hiring for a role you’re interested in, the approach should be different. In that case, you’re not asking for a referral, you’re showing them you’re a great candidate for a role they care about filling.

Final Thoughts

A good referral can save you time, bring better opportunities, and get you straight into interviews. And you don’t need a fancy network, just a clear ask, a strong profile, and a little consistency.

Try it this week. Pick 3 jobs you’re excited about, find 3 people who work at those companies, and send them a thoughtful message.

Why LinkedIn feels so weird and how that can help you get Hired

Let’s be real. LinkedIn is weird.

It’s the only platform where:

A VP of Product shares a five-part framework on stakeholder alignment
A fresher celebrates their first job with 17 emojis and “I’m humbled”
A founder casually announces a $12M seed round
And someone posts a story about getting laid off that racks up 1,500 likes

You come here to check jobs, and suddenly you’re reading:
“I cried in the elevator after a bad one-on-one. Here’s what it taught me about leadership.”

It’s part resume, part therapy, part TED Talk.
It’s weird. It’s chaotic. But it works.

Why LinkedIn still matters

Under all the noise, LinkedIn is still the most powerful platform for job seekers in tech.

Whether you’re an engineer, designer, PM, fresher, manager, or founder, this is where the people who make hiring decisions already spend time.

It’s searchable. It’s visible. And most people don’t know how to use it well.

That’s why the weirdness becomes your edge.

Most people scroll quietly. Some repost the same stuff. Few show up with clarity and consistency.
If you’re one of those few, you stand out.

What should be your goal as a Job Seeker?

Simple. Get the most visibility from the most relevant people.

If the right people see you, like recruiters, hiring managers, or peers who can refer you, your chances of finding the right role go way up.

How to make LinkedIn work for you

1. Post daily (or as often as you can)

You don’t have to sound smart or build a brand. Just share what you’re learning.
Talk about the course or book you’re working through. Tag the author.
Share screenshots or videos of your side project.
Talk about a recent win or even a rejection and what you learned from it.
Be useful. Be real. Don’t shitpost.
People remember consistency more than polish.

2. Leave helpful comments

Comments are powerful. They build visibility with less pressure.
Engage with posts from recruiters, hiring managers, and peers.
If you can add value or context, do it.

3. Repost with your own take

Saw something useful? Share it with a quick thought.
Example:
“This post helped me prep for my last system design interview. I’d also suggest adding [your idea here]”
Reposts with your voice build credibility and they’re easy to do.

4. Connect with the right people

Start small. Aim to send 10 to 15 connection requests each day.
Who should you connect with?

Recruiters hiring in your domain
Hiring managers at companies you like
Engineers, designers, or PMs at your dream companies
Alumni from your school or bootcamp

Keep your message simple and kind:
“Hey [Name], I’ve been following your work at [Company]. Would love to connect.”

5. Send DMs (but do it right)

DMs work. But not if they’re long and generic.
Try this instead:
“Hi [Name], saw your post about the backend role at [Company]. I’ve worked on similar projects and would love to explore this if it’s still open.”
Keep it short and clear.

6. Be original. Be consistent.

When I started sharing my journey from engineering to recruiting, I didn’t have a brand or an audience.
I just showed up and shared what I was figuring out.
And it worked.
You don’t have to go viral. You just have to be visible.
Keep showing up. Even when it feels like no one is watching.
Visibility builds over time. And LinkedIn rewards consistency more than perfection.

Yes, LinkedIn is messy and sometimes confusing.
But it’s also the most open, active network for professionals in tech.

The more clearly and honestly you show up, the more likely you are to find the right opportunity, the right intro, or the right next step.

Why You’re Not Hearing Back from Recruiters as a Fresher (And How to Fix It)

Hi There,

If you’re a fresher applying to jobs and hearing nothing back, not even a rejection, you’re not alone.

You might be thinking:
"I’ve applied to 100+ jobs."
"My resume is decent."
"I’ve done everything I was told to do."

Still, no replies. No interviews. Just silence.

Let’s break this down into two parts.
First, why most freshers never hear back.
Then, how you can avoid that and actually get noticed.

Part 1: Why Most Freshers Never Hear Back from Recruiters

This is not about how good or bad your profile is.
It’s about how overwhelmed the system is.

For any fresher role we post, we usually receive 2,200 to 3,000 applications in a week.
Most of them come from LinkedIn Easy Apply.

Here’s what happens next:

Only 30 to 50 applications are shortlisted
15 to 20 candidates get interviews
1 or 2 candidates get hired

The rest? No one even looks at them.

The reason is simple. Recruiters use an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) that filters resumes based on a degree, college or any other criteria that suits their requirement. There’s no time to go through every profile manually.

As recruiters, we are expected to close roles quickly and hire strong candidates. That means we focus on the profiles that are surfaced early or come through referrals. Not because we don’t care, but because of how the system works.

And in a fresher market, the number of applicants is far greater than the number of roles available. The odds are tough, but they’re not impossible.

Part 2: How to Avoid That and Actually Get Noticed

You can’t control the demand.
But you can increase your chances of being seen.

Here’s how to do that:

1. Apply beyond LinkedIn

Don’t rely only on Easy Apply.
Find the job on the company’s website, startup job boards, or other portals.
The smaller the applicant pool, the higher your chances of being seen.

2. Cold email or message recruiters

Find the recruiter or hiring manager’s email.
Use tools like:

Once you have the contact:

Mention the role you applied for
Add 2 to 3 lines on why you're a good fit
Keep it short and clear
Link your resume or portfolio

You can also send a short, thoughtful message on LinkedIn. Most people don’t do this, which makes it more effective.

3. Reach out to employees in similar roles

Don’t only message HR or recruiters.
Reach out to 3 to 5 people who are already in the role you’re applying for.

Here’s why this works:

They know what the job actually involves
They might refer you if they relate to your background
You’ll stand out as someone who made the effort

Keep it simple. Mention the role, say you admire their work or team, and politely ask if they’re open to referring you.

4. Ask for referrals and follow up

Referrals are one of the most reliable ways to get noticed.
Reach out to:

Friends
Seniors
Alumni from your college

Ask them to refer you for a specific role.
If they say no, ask if they know someone else who is hiring.
Make a small tracker with names, dates, and follow-ups.

People are busy. Following up increases your chances of getting a reply.

5. Build your online presence

You don’t need thousands of followers.
You just need to be visible.

Start by:

Posting about what you’re learning on LinkedIn
Writing short blogs on Medium, Substack, or Hashnode
Commenting on posts from people and companies you’re interested in

Sometimes, recruiters come across profiles by accident. A single post could make you stand out.

Final Thoughts

Most freshers don’t get rejected.
They get ignored because the system is overloaded.

But you can change your odds by being more proactive:

Apply from different platforms
Reach out to recruiters and employees directly
Ask for referrals
Keep following up
Share your work publicly

Doing even two or three of these regularly can help you stand out in a crowded pool.

How to Reach Out to Recruiters for Tech Jobs (Without Being Ignored)

Hi there,
Let me tell you something that might surprise you.
Most people who message me about a job never actually say what they want.
Seriously.
I get 100+ DMs and emails a day. Some of them are great. But a lot of them look like this:

“Hi”
“Hey, are you hiring?”
“Can we talk?”
“Interested in opportunities. Let me know.”

Now imagine seeing 30 messages like that in your inbox and all from strangers, none with context, most without even a LinkedIn profile I can understand at a glance.

No role mentioned. No skills shared. No idea what they’re looking for.

This isn’t just unhelpful. It’s exhausting.

I get it. Reaching out is awkward.

I’ve been on your side.
I used to be a frontend engineer. I still remember how weird it felt to message someone cold and try to sound “professional” while also not sounding like a robot. You want to show interest without seeming desperate. You want to be casual but also taken seriously.

Now that I’m a recruiter, building ClanX and helping engineers land roles across top startups, I can tell you this: most people overthink it... and still get it wrong.

Let me walk you through how to make it simple, clear, and most importantly, respectful of everyone’s time.

Case 1: You saw a job and want to apply

Don’t just say “Interested” or “Check my resume.”

Here’s a better version that sounds human and gets to the point:

“Hey, Juned this side. I saw you’re hiring for a frontend role. I’ve got 4 years of experience working with ReactJS at two product startups.
Would love to know if it’s still open and I can apply.”

That’s it. No fluff. No guessing. Just useful information that helps the conversation move forward.

Case 2: You don’t see a job, but want to get on the radar

Again, don’t go with “Hey, any openings?”

Try something more thoughtful:

“Hey Juned, I came across ClanX and liked how you work with early-stage startups. I’m a frontend dev with 4 years of experience building UI-heavy features. Would be great to stay in touch if something comes up.”

Now I know:

What you do
Why you’re reaching out
That you’re not just blasting messages around

What recruiters wish you’d do

Do:

Say what kind of role you’re looking for
Mention your skills briefly
Share why you’re reaching out to this person
Keep it short (3–5 sentences is perfect)

Don’t:

Send a “Hi” and wait for a response
Expect recruiters to figure out your background for you
Use copy-paste messages with zero context
Attach a resume and no message

Why this matters

You're not just messaging a recruiter. You're one of dozens, sometimes hundreds of people trying to stand out.

If you make it hard to help you, you’re less likely to hear back. Not because we don’t care, but because we just don’t have the time to guess what you want.

Make it easy for us. And you’ll be surprised how much faster the conversation moves.
